Regular Activities

Optua Leisure runs several regular activities for disabled people, including the popular weekly Big Splash supported swimming sessions across the county.

Other regular activities include activity groups, weekly football sessions in Mid Suffolk and a weekly Monday Club which offers a wide range of sports activities throughout the day at Stowmarket Leisure Centre.

Taster sessions in activities such as sailing, archery and cycling are organised throughout the year, along with outings to events such as football matches, concerts and to local places of interest.

Big Splash swimming sessions run every week as follows

Big Splash are popular supported swimming sessions which run every week across Suffolk. Thanks to a fantastic funding boost from Suffolk County Council's Aiming High project we are launching new sessions in Newmarket, Lowestoft, Ipswich and Felixstowe in 2010. Snooker and pool!

Every Thursday we hold snooker and pool sessions at Riley's Snooker Centre in Ipswich between 1pm and 3pm. The cost is £4 per person but costs less for Leisure Plus members. Staff and volunteer support is available. Meet us there. Contact Denis on 01473 311536 for more information.


Bury St Edmunds Cinema Club

The cinema club meets on the first Tuesday of every month from 6pm. It's a chance for disabled people to get together to watch a film at Cineworld in Bury St Edmunds. Advance booking is essential so please call 01473 836770 to register. Transport is available from Needham Market, Stowmarket and Woolpit.


Monday Club
Mondays at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre for a packed day of activities:

Active Antics

Weekly sporting activities such as carpet bowls, boccia, badminton, short tennis, cricket, table tennis, trampolining and basketball. The trampolining takes place at alternate venues - at Gainsborough one week and at Whitton the next.

The cost is £1.85 per session.


Tuesday Club
Every Tuesday at Haverhill Leisure Centre

The cost is £1.60 per activity, £3 for a full morning or afternoon, or £5 for a full day. Tickets can be purchased on the day. For more information call 01473 836770 or 01440 705735.


Activity Goups in Needham Market

First four Tuesdays of every month at Needham Market Community Centre

Sessions involve arts and crafts of all types as well as carpet bowls, gentle exercise and guest demonstrations. Please call Andrea on 01473 836770 for more information.


Stow-ability

Football Session for all abilities on Friday evenings from April to October. The sessions take place from 6pm to 7pm at Stowmarket Middle School (On the all-weather pitch. £2 each session. Followed by a drink and a chat at Stowmarket Leisure Centre (Optional). If you are interested please contact Gordon on 01473 830720.


Fishing

Fishing is a very popular activity for many disabled people and there are several accessible angling venues in our local area. Optua is also part of the Suffolk Disabled Angling Federation

Cycling at Alton Water

Enjoy an afternoon's cycling on the first Friday of the month from March to September 2009. Transport is available or you can meet us there. The cost is £5 for cycling and £8 for transport. These costs are reduced if you are a member of the Leisure Plus club.

The current dates for 2010 are: 7th May and 4th June.
