Disability Sport Academy Launched in Essex

Optua have recently been working with Sportessex to help them set up their own Disability Sport project in Essex.

Building on the success of our own Suffolk Disability Sport Academy, the Essex Disability Sport Academy was launched in March at an event attended by Colin Poole, Chief Executive of Optua and David Finn, Optua Leisure Manager who gave a presentation about the achievements of the Suffolk academy so far.

The main aim of the Essex Academy is the same as our own, to encourage more disabled people in Essex to take up sport and increase and signpost the opportunities that exist for them in the county.

Greg Cooper, from Sportessex said: "In the short term, it's about increasing participation and helping promote the opportunities that are out there for disabled people. Longer term it's about how many athletes we can develop out of these clubs, how we can support the clubs to offer further opportunities and increase their coaching on offer and help people across the community get better at sport."

David Finn, Optua Leisure Manager, added: "It's great to see a similar idea to the one we've developed in Suffolk being launched in Essex and we aim to work closely with our partners in Essex to support their work in the future."
