Disability Sport Showcase Day - Woodbridge

We held our sixth Disability Sport Showcase Day in Woodbridge on Saturday 09 May 2009.

Around 80 disabled people took part in the event, which took place at Farlingaye High School. The Showcase Day offered the chance to have a go at a range of disability sports for free and the taster sessions included archery, athletics, boccia, cycling, football, goalball, judo, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, swimming, tag rugby, tennis and wheelchair tennis and wheelchair basketball.

Those taking part included two members of the GB Sitting Volleyball Squad and Jonathan Ilori, a pupil from the Royal Hospital School who is seen as a potential for the 2012 Olympic Games, being ranked fifth in the country for triple jump.

David Finn, Manager of Optua Leisure, said: "Everyone had a fantastic time at the event and seemed to enjoy the sports sessions we provided. This is the sixth event of its kind we have run in the county and each one has had a real buzz of excitement about it! We hope that some of those who came along will have found a sport they might like to enjoy on a regular basis, or will join a local club. We'd like to thank everyone who made the day possible, including our staff, the volunteers and coaches. We'd also like to thank all the organisations who supported the event and made it possible - the Suffolk Coastal Alliance, Suffolk County Council, Suffolk Sport, Shadwell Estates, Waitrose, F.H. Sayers Foundation and the C.D. Horton Charitable Trust."
