Disability History Month and Optua's 30th anniversary celebrated at new group's launch
A new group to enable disability organisations and disabled people in Suffolk to work together has been launched to celebrate Disability History Month in Suffolk.
The new Suffolk Consortium of User Led Organisations and Individual Disabled People was launched on Wednesday 23rd November at an event attended by around 80 people at Suffolk New College in Ipswich. The new group aims to provide a strong and united voice for all disabled people and their organisations in Suffolk. The event was attended by disabled people, organisations which represent them and organisations such as the county council and NHS Suffolk.

Kevin Curtis, a patron of disability charity Optua and former gold medal-winning Paralympian from Suffolk spoke at the event and Linda Hoggarth and Les Nightingale spoke of the importance of disabled people working together and highlighted interesting events and milestones in the history of disabled people both across the world and in Suffolk. Julia Stephens-Row from Suffolk County Council also welcomed the launch of the new group.
Disability History Month 2011 runs from 22 November to 22 December and was an ideal opportunity to launch the new group and mark the achievements of disability organisations in the county. 2011 also Optua's 30th year of making a difference to the lives of disabled people in Suffolk and its work, along with many other local charities and organisations was celebrated at the event.

The event was attended by people from key statutory organisations such as councils, the police, colleges, NHS etc, who all made pledges that they would do their best to address some of the issues which people felt were affecting their lives. To download and read the full report please click here.
Please email us at feedback@optua.org.uk if you would like to be kept informed about this work and of future events.
