In our quarterly News and Views newsletter we have recently been asking readers to suggest the best accessible places for disabled people to eat in Suffolk. We thought it might be useful to share recommendations based on the experiences of disabled diners so that other people can find good places to eat.
We are also looking for suggestions of any places to visit across the county, whether they are places of interest, theatres or places in the countryside which welcome disabled people or are easy to access. Click here to see our list of other places to visit.
The recommendations received so far for accessible places to eat are included below. If you have had a positive experience eating in a pub, cafe or restaurant in Suffolk please let us know by calling James Powell on 01473 836746 or emailing feedback@optua.org.uk .
The Alex Cafe and Restaurant - Felixstowe
"The food is always excellent. There is good access and a lift to the upstairs restaurant where there is a stunning sea-view. Wheelchair accessible toilet facilities are also upstairs. Downstairs, the cafe serves food all day and caters for all tastes. There is outside seating too with heaters. Staff are friendly and helpful, serving food more quickly when I explain that I cannot stay out long with my illness. They also cater well for children and the chocolate fondant dessert is the best I have ever tasted!"

The Beagle - Sproughton
"The Beagle has two car parking spaces for disabled people. It has level access to all eating areas and sufficient space for wheelchair users inside the pub. There are accessible toilet facilities, the staff provide assistance and the pub provides good and reasonably priced food. You can take as long as you wish to eat your meal and can sit out in the garden when the weather is good. It can get busy in the evenings."

The Black Tiles - Martlesham
"The Black Tiles has disabled parking spaces, level entrance and excellent unisex disabled toilets."

Hollow Tree Farm shop cafe - Semer, near Hadleigh
"The Hollow Tree Cafe has disabled parking, a level entrance (although a very small lip in access from shop to cafe) and a unisex disabled toilet. They do light meals (home made), sandwiches, cakes, coffee and tea etc."

Please note that these recommendations are based on the personal recommendations of readers of Optua's News and Views newsletter.
We recently took part in a BBC Radio Suffolk discussion about accessible places to visit in Suffolk which disabled people might like to visit. Some listeners called in to suggest some places which we thought we'd add to this page. We plan to expand and add more suggestions as and when we get them. If you would like to recommend anywhere, please let us know by calling James Powell on 01473 836746 or emailing feedback@optua.org.uk
New Wolsey Theatre - Ipswich
Someone called in to say the theatre is a good place to go for disabled people as it offers a free ticket to an accompanying carer and a discount for disabled people.

RSPB Minsmere
Another listener suggested the RSPB Nature Reserve at Minsmere near Westleton as someone for disabled people to visit. Although the reserve is very big and parts of it are naturally difficult to get to, their website hsd a great deal of information as to which trails and hides are accessible for wheelchair users. There is also one electrically powered wheelchair and one Remploy wheelchair are available for free loan. One electrically powered wheelchair and one Remploy wheelchair are available for free loan; contact the visitor centre for availability.
